Mathematics

The Maths team is a forward thinking team who are committed to showing students the beauty of mathematics and making sure that they are able to use mathematics to succeed in whatever walk of life they choose.  At Maiden Erlegh we aim to make learning Mathematics an enjoyable experience.

We would hope to provide the students with a warm, friendly and orderly classroom atmosphere - an environment which will make a significant difference to their motivation and overall achievement in Mathematics. To help us and the students reach their full potential, staff will always endeavour to make Mathematics challenging and demand high standards of work from all our students.

Students are set in ability groups from Year 7, and this setting is monitored regularly to ensure that the students are correctly set at all times. In class, as well as learning mathematical knowledge, the students are encouraged to develop their problem solving, communication, visualisation and logical thinking skills.

The students will also look at the application of Mathematics to everyday life and how numeracy is integral to all subjects.

Teachers have collaboratively produced a GCSE course which offers them flexibility in their teaching, promotes varied learning approaches and gives a structure that ensures that all students have access to the necessary skills.

At Key Stage 4 we follow the Edexcel specification for GCSE.  At Key Stage 5 we offer A-levels in Mathematics and Further Mathematics (both Edexcel specification) as well as a one year qualification in “Level 3 Mathematical Studies” (AQA specification).

Each year students are encouraged to take part in the UK Mathematics Challenge at junior, intermediate and senior level. In the past students have had great success in this event. The Maths faculty regularly enters students into the UKMT competitions for both individuals and teams In addition we celebrate World of Maths day and are very active in providing master classes throughout the year focusing on different groups of students.
