Celebrating Our Students' Success in the UCL Ocean Health Challenge!

We are incredibly proud to announce that students from Maiden Erlegh School have been recognised for their outstanding work in the prestigious UCL Ocean Health Challenge, a national competition that encourages young people to develop creative solutions to protect our oceans.

WHAT IS THE UCL OCEAN HEALTH CHALLENGE?

The UCL Ocean Health Challenge is a free educational programme for students aged 11-18, designed by world-class experts at University College London. It combines environmental awareness with hands-on engineering design, challenging students to explore the impact of plastic pollution and develop their own innovative solutions. Through this, students learn to apply planet-centred design principles and the engineering design cycle to tackle real-world problems.

OUR WINNING STUDENTS

A huge congratulations to our talented students who have been awarded for their hard work and creativity:

- Ella Westbrook was awarded the Year 7 winner prize for her project, in which she designed an alternative weather balloon utilising less waste plastic material. This is based on sound evidence research that current weather balloons are a source of plastic pollution.

- Harshal Devare was awarded the Year 8 runner up prize for his project on a smart bin which auto recycles materials and rewards users with points.

This is a fantastic achievement, with our students' work being selected from over 1,600 qualifying entries from across the UK.

A WORD FROM OUR STAFF

Mrs Rogeon, who supported the students through the challenge, commented: "We are immensely proud of what our students have accomplished. Their dedication, creativity, and passion for protecting our planet are truly inspiring. This achievement is a testament to their hard work and the importance of hands-on STEM learning."
